Compliance

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. It reads:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
--Legal Citation: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX)

Sex discrimination includes sexual harassment and sexual assault.

While it is often thought of as a law that applies to athletics programs, Title IX is much broader than Athletics and applies to many programs at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. While compliance with the law is everyone's responsibility at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, listed below are the staff members who have primary responsibility for Title IX compliance.

Title IX protects all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, immigration status, or whether they have disability. Students who report sexual violence have a right to expect their school to take steps to protect and support them. ~ First Report of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.

Filing a complaint
If you wish to file a complaint against a Â鶹ÊÓƵ student, faculty or staff member for sexual harassment, sex discrimination, or sexual assault, you may contact the Title IX Coordinator, any of the Deputy Title IX Coordinators, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Police Department, or any responsible employee.  A responsible employee is any university employee who has the authority to take action to address complaints of sexual violence or any other misconduct or whom a student could reasonably believe has the authority or duty.

The Title IX Team is responsible for institutional compliance matters including training, education, communication, and administration of the grievance procedure for all complaints.

Gender Equity in Athletics
